Before we even consider AI, we look for foundational product management expertise - like strategic thinking, customer discovery, and cross-functional leadership - as these are the absolute baseline.
Every AI role has unique technical requirements, but the following list represents the core foundational skills necessary for success across various AI product domains:
- Ability to Translate Data Science into User Value: AI has fundamentally changed the role, requiring our PMs to have a technical grasp of machine learning concepts, Large Language Models (LLMs), and probabilistic systems. We seek a candidate who possesses a solid foundational understanding of the ML lifecycle (such as data requirements, model training, evaluation metrics) and can translate these technical concepts into tangible user experiences and business outcomes. This is necessary to successfully partner with data science, engineering and GTM teams, and
- Understanding the non-deterministic nature of AI outputs. We look for a demonstrated ability to set realistic user expectations, design robust failure/fallback states in the user experience, and proactively address critical concerns around Responsible AI throughout the entire product lifecycle.
